Situated on the coast north of Wellington along the tranquil waterfront at Karehana Bay, this two level family residence is designed to maximise sun and views.

The sea front location inspired the nautical flavour of the design. Sweeping curves mirror the swell of the ocean and the ripples of sand on the beach. The nautical theme is carried through to the interior. With bi-folding doors opening onto decks the main living areas give the impression of being on the ocean aboard a ship.

Entry into the house leads to a dramatic double height atrium space which links the two levels and provides circulation between other spaces. This space acts as an internal street and a transition zone between outside and inside. Tiled flooring, textured wall finishes and internal window openings from the upper living spaces create a sense of being in a narrow Mediterranean street.

The house was specifically designed with outdoor living in mind. Direct access to the outside is provided from every bedroom on the ground level and extensive decks serve the main living areas and kitchen on the upper level. The split level family room / kitchen is located to capture all day sun and sea breezes. The atrium creates a focal axis through the house and provides visual links between the rooms. A large central window offers spectacular views and provides lots of natural light to the atrium.

The latest technology has been incorporated into the house for comfortable and convenient living. A home intelligence system controls security, access, irrigation, heating and lighting and operates high level automatic opening windows at a preset temperature. The home intelligience system can be programmed to suit the clients needs and can be operated remotely by telephone. The house also includes a central vacuum system and has integrated audio and tv cabling.
