Guest House,
Plimmerton
Needing to provide
accommodation for
a planned summer visit
by friends from the
United Kingdom and
the requirement for
a clinic space for
a new home based massage
therapy business saw
Gary & Waverley Key
approach Freear Philip
Ltd for assistance.
Their existing stone
cottage located along
Plimmerton's idyllic
sea front was not
big enough for their
pending needs. With
the creative talents
of the FPL design
studio and the expertise
of FPL building a
new guest room addition
was designed and constructed
on the property.

Several alternatives
were initially investigated
including an option
to construct a new
upper floor. The decision
was taken to accommodate
the guest facilities
within a new pavilion
structure constructed
at the rear of the
building as an extension
from the existing
garage. The simple
form of the building
followed that of the
garage along the property
boundary.
Careful consideration
was taken to ensure
that the addition
would be sympathetic
to the character of
the existing cottage
which is noted in
the local district
plan as a building
of special interest. |

The well established
and very pretty rear
garden was also a
defining factor. The
new addition formed
an L with the existing
house creating a strong
boundary on two sides
containing the garden.
The new guest facilities
include a large bedsit
with ensuite bathroom
and double french
doors leading to the
garden. A new adjoining
laundry provides sufficient
space to accommodate
kitchen facilities
should this be a future
requirement.

The client was extremely
pleased with the final
result and the way
in which Freear Philip
Ltd undertook and
managed the entire
process from design
through to construction.
Freear Philip Ltd
consulted with the
local city council
and took care of the
required Resource
and Building consents.
Costing advice was
provided along the
way and competitive
quotations obtained
from top quality subcontractors
prior to commencing
construction. The
UK visitors enjoyed
their summer holiday,
comfortably accommodated
in the new guest facility.
The space is now used
regularly as a massage
therapy clinic.
